The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM, ) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) was established in 1979 as the Department of Institutional Management and Catering Studies. It was renamed as Department of Hotel and Tourism Management in 1992. The Department was designated a School in October 2001, which became an independent autonomous academic unit within the University structure in July 2004. According to a study published in the ''Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research'' in November 2009, the School is ranked No. 2 internationally among hotel and tourism schools based on research and scholarship. With over 2,000 students and 65 (academic staff ) drawn from 20 countries and regions, the School offers programmes at levels ranging from Higher Diploma to Ph.D. In 2012, the SHTM received from the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE) the McCool Breakthrough Award.
